About
Welcome to my blog. For years I have wanted to record, for posterity, some of the stories my father and mother told me when I was younger, plus some of the things that I learned through my genealogical research. When I was working full time I didn’t have the time to do it. But now I am retired – happily, I might add – and have decided to write these things down before I expire.
A bit about me; My name is Floyd Bowles, and I grew up in Massachusetts. After graduating from high school in 1972, I attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. A part of my army career was spent in graduate school at Purdue University, where I studied Mechanical Engineering in preparation for an assignment to the staff and faculty at West Point. After I retired from the Army I began a second career teaching engineering and engineering technology at Midlands Technical College in Columbia, South Carolina, which I did until I retired again in 2020.
In 1976 I was a new 2nd Lieutenant at Fort Benning, Georgia, where I met Laura. We were married two months after the day we met. Three children and 46 years later we are still going strong. I am indeed a very fortunate man to have been so mightily blessed with her!
In the years before he died, Laura’s father did a great deal of genealogical research on her family, and when he passed Laura inherited his notes and records. It was so interesting to go through those records! He had discovered so much about Laura’s Canadian and Scottish heritage. But when Laura asked if she had any Revolutionary War ancestors (so she could join the DAR) her father’s notes indicated no such thing. So I decided to dig a bit further, and discovered some pretty interesting things, much of which I plan to post on this site. My hope is that when my grandsons get older and become interested in where they came from they will be able to come here and find out some of the details.
This site, however, is public, which will allow others to learn what I have discovered, correct any errors that are found, and if you like, contribute your own recollections of our family.
